The Lauritzen Log
August 2008
The Restroom Code - The restroom code will remain the same the month of August but look for a change in September. Currently the code number is 415---remember ten years ago when that used to be our area code?
Gas Dock Prices - At least for the moment fuel prices have leveled out for us. We purchased a load just before the July 4th weekend when there was a dip and have received another load since the fourth when there was a dip in prices again so that we have enough fuel to last us the rest of July. Currently Regular is $4.90 and Premium is $ 4.99. Business since the July 4th weekend has been very slow and our inventory has not moved so our prices are what they are. As soon as amounts are low enough to get a new load hopefully our prices will reflect a much lower price.
A Good Dose of Hot Weather - For the month of July we have recorded a total of eleven hot days where the ambient temperature here at the harbor was over 100 degrees. The highest temperature we recorded on our weather machine was 112 degrees. It made being on the water a great idea just to cool down.
The Fishing Report - Anglers were still catching sturgeon on the Sacramento River near buoys 8 & 10 just outside of Sherman Lake as of the end of June. As of the first of July things just kind of stopped. There are plenty of cat fish to be caught according to our very own Alex Soto who fishes in either Mayberry Slough or out in the middle of Sherman Lake.
One of the big questions has been where are the blue gill which are a great live bait to use on stripers? Usually we have more than our fair share of blue gill but so far there have been very few in the harbor.
As of July 24th we are seeing a lot of fingerling black bass that have recently hatched. There are hundreds of them darting in the water behind C shed and the gas dock. Perhaps the fingerlings will make great bait for the blue gill.
Our very own Walt is catching stripers up to 17 lbs. by trolling or plug casting. Curt of the Canvas Factory and Henri of Performance Marine have been going out with Walt as well. When the three of them get together there's no stopping them from catching stripers.
Charlie Bratcher on the motor vessel, Carman's RX, has been doing a little sturgeon fishing when the wind isn't blowing. He has been fishing around the west end of West Island in the deep water. He has been catching nothing but throw back stripers.
The Harbor Cue - As reported last month, the Barbeque is slated for Saturday, August 16th starting at 4:30 p.m. with a social hour, followed by a great meal at 6:00 p.m. sharp.
We will also open up the jumpy room at 4:30 p.m. We do ask the parents of small kids to please stay with them while they are in the room. If you have already sent in your RSVP great, if you haven't please take the time to fill out one of the RSVP's now and get it to us before August 10th.
See you at the cue!
